Boris Feoktistov - Ensemble Armée rouge - Kamarinskaia
Russian Red Army Ensemble - "Kamarinskaya". Kamarinskaya is a Russian traditional dance, which is mostly known today as the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka's magnum opus. --------------------------- The Red Army Choir (Choir Aleksandrov) is a performing ensemble that serves as the official army choir of the Russian armed forces. The ensemble consists of a male choir, an orchestra, and a dance ensemble. The songs they perform range from Russian folk tunes to church hymns, operatic arias and popular music; examples include The Volga Boatmen's Song, Katyusha, Kalinka, Kernina and Ave Maria. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Red Army Choir has continued performing, entertaining audiences both inside and outside Russia.

Igudesman's Wonderful World of the Balalaika
My next "Classical Music Road Movie" features the Balalaika, a much loved instrument in Novosibirsk and Irkutsk. Great virtuosos of the instrument such as Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin and Lawrence Power give new insight, whilest Florian Leonhard talks about its origin. Also featuring Alexandra Schulz from HarrisonParrot Balalaika agency, as well as young, upcoming Balalaika virtuosos from Norway and Russia, Ragnhild Hemsing and Asya Sorshneva and my humble selve, showing how Balalaika playing can actually make the sky cry.
